Renew Your Child’s Smile

Decay, accidents, and other unfortunate circumstances can afflict anyone. Children, in particular, may be especially vulnerable to dental damage because they have not yet learned how to take good care of their teeth. If your little one ever suffers significant harm to one of their teeth, our Murphy pediatric dental practice is ready to help. We might recommend the placement of a dental crown, which can renew your child’s smile, spare them from pain, and improve their oral function.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is sometimes called a “cap” because its purpose is to cover the entire portion of a tooth that is visible above the gumline. We may recommend a crown for your child if:

  • A tooth is badly decayed or misshapen.
  • A tooth has recently undergone endodontic treatment, such as pulp therapy.
  • A tooth was damaged in an accident.
  • A tooth is very weak.

Crowns can restore the strength, function, and appearance of damaged teeth. They can be used for both baby teeth and permanent ones.

At Bloom Pediatric Dentistry, we offer crowns made of a variety of materials, including stainless steel, zirconia, hybrid resin polymer, resin-based or high viscosity glass ionomer-based strip crowns, and more.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The process of getting a dental crown requires at least two appointments.  During the first appointment, we will prepare your child’s tooth. This may involve removing a bit of its enamel or adding material to build it up. We will numb their mouth during this process, so they should feel little to no discomfort. Once the tooth is ready, we will place a temporary restoration on it.

A laboratory will work to create your child’s permanent crown. Once it is ready, you will bring your child back to our office so we can verify that the restoration lives up to our expectations before we attach it to the tooth.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

A dental crown can have several benefits for your child:

  • It can reduce their dental pain and allow them to eat a variety of foods without discomfort.
  • It can protect a damaged baby tooth until it is ready to fall out on its own.
  • Some crown materials look very natural, so your child should be able to keep smiling with confidence.
  • Crowns are very strong. If they are placed on a permanent tooth, they may last for 10 – 15 years or longer.
  • A crown may prevent the need for a tooth extraction, which can be a challenging procedure for kids to undergo.
